If you're looking for a memorable way to celebrate Chinese New Year this year (albeit a little late) you can't do better than the GuGu Drum Group performance at UMass Fine Arts Center on February 11. 2020 is the Year of the Rat according to Chinese Zodiac and the rat is the first of all zodiac animals and is seen as a sign of wealth and abundance and represents the beginning of a new day. I feel like all those attending this energetic performance will feel invigorated and inspired themselves.
This award-winning and top-rated drum group from Shanghai offers a theatrical drum drama depicting historical and culturally significant drum compositions that present profound insight into unity, human evolution, awareness, wisdom, social commitment, and communication through percussive movements. Audiences across the world have found their work to be impressive, citing their work as being “jawdropping from beginning to end!” (Goldstar Review).
Our local performance will be held on Tuesday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the UMASS Fine Arts Center Concert Hall.
Director Yang Xiaodong and his authentic ancient drum movements represent a powerful lineage dating back to the times of the Emperors of Chinese Dynasties. The contemporary approach features drum vignettes based on timeless Chinese proverbs, fables, and fairy tales.
The GuGu Drum Group uses instruments from small finger cymbals to large standing drums to create a powerful story for the audience. Their high-energy dance and music combine with their traditional and fantastical Chinese costumes to enchant people of all ages. There is plenty of FREE parking on campus, and the concert hall is very family-friendly with opportunities to step outside the performance hall and still view the show on large screens if little ones need to stretch their legs. There will be a pre-performance talk in the concert hall lobby beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $38, $28, $20; Five College Students and Youth 17 & Under: $10. Under40TIX become available for this performance on January 24, 2020. For tickets call the Box Office at 545-2511, toll-free at 800-999-UMAS, or purchase online.
